Laredo ISD improves campus safety with metal detectors and new app

LAREDO, Texas (KGNS) – The first day of school can be stressful for students and parents, but since the Uvalde tragedy, safety has been a top priority for schools. The Laredo Independent School District (LISD) has implemented several new safety measures to ensure a safe environment.

LISD has installed metal detectors at elementary and middle schools and gun detectors at high schools. Additionally, a new app allows teachers to quickly summon help when needed.

Dr. Óscar Pérez, LISD’s Executive Director of Health and Safety, stressed the importance of safety being a collaborative effort. “This year, we will continue with silent panic alarm technology, where you can download the app to your phone so we can instantly access and communicate with our emergency responders, our administration and our district team,” said Dr. Pérez. “We also have the ability to train on the computer.”

Valeria Caramillo, a fifth-grade teacher at JC Martin Elementary, reflected on the impact of the tragedy in Uvalde. Irma Garcia and Eva Mireles, teachers who died in the shooting, were once her colleagues when she was a fourth-grade teacher. “When something tragic happens, you think about it – life is so short,” Caramillo said. “You rethink your safety measures and do everything you can to be proactive and prevent tragic incidents like this from happening.”

The district hopes these new measures will ensure the safety of everyone on its campuses and in its offices.

LISD employs 52 police officers and over 72 security guards at its schools.
