LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ — With the number of car thefts increasing across the country, Lawrence Township Police are hosting a free event for residents with Hyundai cars, Police Chief Chris Longo announced.
The police and Hyundai are holding a free anti-theft software upgrade event from August 23 to 25.
The mobile software upgrade event will be held at Lawrence High School, 2525 Princeton Pike, Lawrence Township.

The software update will equip eligible Hyundai vehicles with anti-theft software designed to protect against the theft mode popular on social media, Longo said.
The weekend event in Lawrence Township is free to all area residents who own or lease a Hyundai vehicle with mechanical “twist-to-start” key ignition between 2011 and 2021.

All Hyundai owners who receive the software upgrade will receive a voucher for a free car wash by the Lawrence High School Cheer Squad, valid through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Specially trained mobile service technicians will be on site to install and complete the software upgrade, which should take less than 30 minutes. There will be an air-conditioned customer lounge and complimentary snacks and drinks.
This is also an opportunity to meet members of the Lawrence Township Police Department.
All Hyundai owners present will receive a steering wheel lock free of charge.
According to a report from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, the solution is extremely effective. “If you own a Hyundai or Kia vehicle without an electronic engine immobilizer, you should call your local dealer and get the software upgrade today,” the IIHS report says.
