Lender Center Student Research Fellowship Program — Syracuse University News

Campus and Community

Students interested in the impact of social justice and historical racist practices on public health are eligible to apply for the 2024–26 Lender Center for Social Justice Student Fellowship Program. Their project will address the historical legacy of “redlining,” a discriminatory practice that designates certain neighborhoods, particularly predominantly Black neighborhoods, as unworthy of credit.

Five students will be selected to form an interdisciplinary research team. They will work with Miriam Mutambudzi, the 2024–26 Lender Center Faculty Fellow and Assistant Professor of Public Health in the Falk College of Sport and Human Dynamics. Her research project examines how Black adults living in historically segregated neighborhoods may experience disadvantaged career trajectories and resulting health outcomes. She aims to raise awareness of the ongoing impacts of discriminatory practices as fundamental determinants of health and use these findings to inform policymakers and community leaders.

Working with Mutambudzi, the student assistants will conduct data analysis, collect literature on social and economic inequalities and health outcomes for residents of these areas, and synthesize the findings. They will also work with residents and grassroots organizations studying the impacts of redlining practices in Syracuse.

Students of all disciplines and backgrounds interested in community engagement and social justice can apply online. They will work on the project for two years and present their findings at the 2026 Lender Center for Social Justice Symposium. Participants will receive a $2,000 grant with the possibility of additional funding. Details of the program can be found on the Lender Center’s grant webpage.
