Lexi Thompson receives wildcard tip for the Solheim Cup

It was no surprise that the Americans Solheim-Cup captain Stacy Lewis has awarded a wildcard pick to Lexi Thompsonwho will retire from full-time sport at the end of this season.

Lewis also selected Jennifer Kupcho And Sarah Schmelzel for the three-day competition, which takes place in Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Virginia from September 13 to 15.

Lewis said: “It was a pretty easy decision for us. She is someone who will help the team a lot on and off the golf course,” Lewis added. “With her experience, everyone on the team will watch what she does and try to learn from her.”

Thompson has 12.5 points in her 23 games, including three of four points in last year’s 14-14 draw in Spain that saw Europe defend its trophy.

“To be able to represent my country is the greatest honor I can have,” said Thompson, who turned professional at age 15. “To be back this year, especially in the United States, is a dream come true.”

Europe assembled its team on Monday, with captain Susann Pettersen Choose Georgia Hall, Anna Nordqvist, Emily Pedersen And Albane Valenzuela as their selection.

England’s Charley Hull And Esther Henseleit from Germany topped the points list of the Solheim Cup of the Ladies European Tour and secured their place, while Ireland’s Leona MaguireFrance’s Celine Boutier, Carlota Ciganda from Spain and the Swedish trio Maja Stark, Linn Grant And Madelene Sagstrom qualified based on their world rankings.

Europe is aiming to win the trophy for the fourth year in a row, as the tournament was moved to even-numbered years to avoid clashing with the Ryder Cup.
