Lincoln police arrest man for stealing truck and credit card

LINCOLN, Nebraska (KOLN) – Lincoln police have arrested a man accused of stealing a truck and a credit card from a local business.

According to court documents, 45-year-old Richard Crane was arrested for theft of more than $5,000. Crane was also charged with unauthorized use of a financial transaction device for less than $500.

Court documents show that Lincoln police were called to a burglary near W. South and Southwest Fifth Street around 9:11 a.m. on August 7

Officers were told someone broke into a nearby business and stole a black Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck. The owner of the pickup said he left the pickup unlocked inside the building and kept the keys inside.

The thief had found the back door of the store unlocked and the pickup truck missing. The security cameras monitoring the interior of the building were turned off at the time of the theft.

Inside the pickup truck were various tools, a Cen-Tech jump starter kit, and a credit card. The credit card was found to have been used at a local tobacco shop at approximately 4:48 a.m. Video from the tobacco shop was reviewed with facial recognition software and showed similarities to Crane.

On August 11, the truck was found near the corner of South Seventh and A Streets and impounded. The pickup truck was found with a University of Nebraska-Lincoln ticket dated August 9. A man resembling Crane was seen in close-up video.

According to court documents, with the help of someone who knew Crane, police were able to positively identify the person in the smoke shop video as Crane.

According to court documents, on August 15, Crane attempted to pay at the same tobacco shop using the same credit card, but the transaction was declined. Crane arrived and left on a small motorcycle.

On August 16, Crane was arrested and taken to prison.

Crane’s bail was set at 10% of $7,500. A hearing is scheduled for September 18.
