Lions receive good news about injured cornerback Terrion Arnold

The Detroit Lions have received good news regarding the injury to first-round pick and projected starting cornerback Terrion Arnold.

Arnold, who left practice on Monday for an evaluation due to an upper-body issue, was reportedly dealing with a chest injury but is not expected to miss the regular season, according to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network.

On the first one-on-one rep, Arnold blocked a throw from wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown and landed hard on his side, causing the first-year defensive back to hold his right arm away from his body as he left the field. He was examined by trainers on the sidelines and left practice shortly afterward.

It was the first of two injuries that occurred in individual practice. Rookie cornerback Ennis Rakestraw Jr. had to leave practice with an ankle injury after he was injured defending a long ball against Jameson Williams.

Cornerback Carlton Davis III, the expected starter alongside Arnold, missed all of practice due to an undisclosed illness. The Lions are still awaiting news on Davis and Rakestraw. Lions head coach Dan Campbell will not meet with the media again until after Saturday’s preseason game against the Kansas City Chiefs.

The Lions signed a cornerback on Tuesday, bringing in experienced Essang Bassey.

Green approves waivers

Injured wide receiver Antoine Green has cleared waivers, according to NFL transaction records.

Green suffered a head and neck injury – Lions head coach Daniel Campbell called it “a kind of neck concussion” – in Thursday’s preseason opener against the New York Giants, when he called a running play for Sione Vaki.

He was placed on waivers on Monday and now returns to the Lions’ injured list. If he remains on the injured list through the end of the preseason, the injury will officially be season-ending. Alternatively, the Lions can release Green with an injury agreement and sign him at a later date, allowing him to return later in the season.

“We’ve had several doctors look at his scans and we felt this is the best thing for him and we need to do it,” Campbell said on Monday. “That’s the way it is. We don’t want to do this. We love the boy, he works hard, he works, but … this is obviously a serious injury.”
