LISTEN: “The Things You Never Told Me” by Icarus Phoenix is confessional indie rock with groovy guitars

Icarus Phoenix hails from Baltimore, MD. Its members are Drew Danburry (guitar/vocals), Eli Sims (drums), Leena Rhodes (guitar/vocals/synth), and Brendan Russell (bass). The band was originally formed in Missoula, Montana in 2020 and has had several lineups, one of which played at the Treefort Music Fest in Boise, ID in 2021.

Drew Danburry has been touring and releasing records independently since 2002. He has released over 400 songs on over 20 albums/13 EPs and played over 800 shows worldwide including 2 Daytrotter sessions, 3 invitations to Pop Montreal and 1 to Pygmalion Music Festival. He has achieved this long list of accomplishments almost entirely on his own.

Through the dense textures of their shoegaze influences, their touching and personal approach to songwriting shines through as Icarus Phoenix fearlessly pushes the boundaries of indie rock on “The Things You Never Told Me.” The bright guitar tones are contrasted with downcast and sentimental vocals as the band craft a stunning indie rock ballad. There are no frills here, just raw emotion conveyed via simple but effective instrumentation, and that simplicity is key. Lyrics like “It doesn’t hurt me that you don’t want me. What upsets me is how you lie” could have lost their impact with a busier arrangement. Thankfully, Icarus Phoenix has used exhilarating instrumental breaks to give the listener a breather from the heavy lyrics while showcasing the band’s undeniable musicianship. “The Things You Never Told Me” is an emotionally gripping piece that takes the weight off Icarus Phoenix’s shoulders by skillfully showcasing his vulnerability and understanding his unique approach to indie rock.
