Living mural for the 20th anniversary of the Latino Research Center

To mark the 20th anniversary of the Latino Research Center (LRC) this fall, the LRC announced a special project that will leave a lasting impression on the University of Nevada, Reno campus and community. In honor of this significant milestone, the LRC plans to create a vibrant mural that will beautify the campus environment and serve as a tribute to the rich culture, heritage and contributions of Nevada’s Latino community.

This mural will be prominently displayed outside the doors of the LRC in the hallways of Edmund J. Cain Hall. It will embody the themes of unity, diversity and empowerment and reflect the richness of the Latino experience in Nevada. The mural is intended to inspire all who pass by and remind them of the strength and resilience of the Latino community, the critical role it has played in shaping the state, and the promising future for generations to come.

The mural is being painted by local Northern Nevada artist Edwin Martinez Escobar. Escobar is known for his vibrant and dynamic artistic style that captures the essence of Latino culture with authenticity and passion. His work is celebrated for its ability to tell powerful stories through vivid imagery and intricate detail. His work can be found throughout Northern Nevada, including at the Carson City Chamber of Commerce, Brewery Arts Center, Artown, local businesses, parks, and Reno Tahoe International Airport.

“It is truly an honor to partner with the University of Nevada, Reno and LRC on this groundbreaking project,” said Escobar. “It is being done with the utmost respect, love and passion.”

Escobar’s mural will be a symbol of pride and celebration, symbolizing the past, present and future of the Latino community at the university and beyond. This artwork will be a testament to the diverse and inclusive spirit that characterizes the institution, and it will be a lasting source of inspiration for students, faculty, staff and visitors alike.

“It’s nice to know that our Latinx students on campus can walk through our hallways and experience a meaningful visual representation of their identity as well.”

To make this vision a reality, the Latino Research Center is seeking community support. The creation of this mural will cost $25,000 and everyone is invited to help the LRC reach this goal through donations. Contributions not only support the creation of this beautiful mural, but also reinforce the commitment to celebrating and preserving Nevada’s unique heritage and culture.

“This is an incredible opportunity to recognize and celebrate the invaluable contributions of the Latino community in Nevada,” said Dr. Jafeth Sanchez, director of the LRC. “It is wonderful to know that our Latinx students on campus can walk through our hallways and experience a meaningful representation of their identity visually as well.”

The LRC looks forward to celebrating this momentous occasion with the community and is excited to foster a deeper appreciation for the cultural richness that makes the University so special.
