Local hairdressers aim to offer 1,000 free haircuts at the back-to-school event

MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) – Hundreds of students in grades 1-12 gathered at the Alliant Center on Sunday for a free back-to-school haircut.

This year, over 30 hairdressers volunteered for Back 2 School Free Haircutz, with a goal of 1,000 haircuts. Some hairdressers, like Erin Hall, have been volunteering at the annual event since it began 16 years ago.

“I think this is just a great event,” Hall said. “I mean, for us all to come together like we do every year. I think this is an important thing that we need to keep going and, you know, everyone should support it.”

Hall has been cutting hair in Madison since 2000 and opened his own hair salon, Resilient Hair Designs, in 2009. Over the years, he has learned how important a haircut can be.

“You can go in feeling a certain way about yourself and feel like a completely different person and look like a different person afterwards. And I think those are important things. It prepares all of us for our lives, whether it’s a job or a certain event, weddings, whatever it may be,” Hall said.

All of the volunteer hairdressers wanted to help the children start the new school year with confidence.

The event originally started at JP Hair Design, but eventually moved to the Alliant Energy Center as they reached more community members. Last year there were 700 free haircuts.

Participants were also offered additional resources such as free books, vaccinations and drinks.
