Lombardo reaffirms his commitment to free school meals in a letter to parents

RENO, Nevada (KOLO) – Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo reiterated his commitment to free school meals in an open letter to parents.

“My administration has worked hard to provide our schools, teachers and students with critical new funding and resources so we can maximize student success and learning outcomes,” writes Governor Joe Lombardo. “Last year, I provided over $12 billion in funding for K-12 education, increasing per-student funding by 25 percent and representing the largest education investment in state history.”

“However, we also know that ensuring a safe learning environment includes ensuring access to free or reduced-price meals for students in need,” Governor Lombardo continued. “I am grateful that we have robust programs in place to ensure these students receive free school meals in Nevada.”

Lombardo says 80.6% of Nevada students are automatically eligible for free school meals through their school’s Community Eligibility Provision.

Any other student participating in another government assistance program is automatically entitled to free school meals.

“I think most Nevadans would agree that politics has no place in our school cafeterias. Families have a right to trust our school lunch programs and students have a right to easy access to nutritious meals at school. They have a right to know the truth. For more information on accessing free or reduced-price school meals, visit the Nevada Department of Agriculture website,” Lombardo continued.
