Lucid expands model range to better compete with Tesla

Lucid CEO Peter Rawlinson had previously mentioned a Model Y competitor that is set to hit the market at the end of 2026 at prices under $50,000 – the large Lucid Air electric sedan currently starts at $70,000, but is also available in versions over $200,000. It was obvious that this mid-range SUV would also be accompanied by a corresponding sedan (as a counterpart to the Tesla Model 3).

The portal AutoBuzz interviewed Derek Jenkins, Senior Vice-President of Design and Brand at Lucid Motors, and learned that the mid-range program will include three vehicles. “They will be younger vehicles, they will be sportier vehicles,” said Jenkins. According to the conversation with Jenkins AutoBuzz excludes a station wagon.

Instead, the design and brand manager suggests that the ominous third mid-range model could be off-road capable: “The off-road sector will continue to change and evolve. There will be products that try to serve the fringe of off-road driving, such as rock crawling, and then there are the normal crossover products,” Jenkins added.

‘CarBuzz’, however, considers the statements to be more of a deception – and even speculates about an independent sports car as a coupe or convertible, possibly even a small pickup or a Sapphire version of the mid-size sedan.

So far, Lucid Motors has launched the Air, a very efficient and media-acclaimed premium electric sedan. However, sales have been rather sluggish, which is why the company has repeatedly reduced prices and brought cheaper drive versions onto the market. With the large electric SUV Gravity, a second model with this technology is now about to be launched on the market. Lucid developed the vehicles with billions of dollars in investments from Saudi Arabia and is also pushing ahead with its factory projects. In addition to production in Arizona, Lucid now also has a factory in Saudi Arabia. Where and in what quantities the mid-range models will be built is not yet known.
