Lukes leads women’s golf in her fall debut

CLEMSON, SC — App State Women’s Golf played its first fall tournament four days after introducing the new head coach Chan Metts and finished 11th out of 16 teams with a strong opening round at the 36-hole Tiger Classic on Monday.

Sophomore at App State Ona Lukes’ An even-par 72 in Round 1 – two strokes better than her lowest score as a freshman – highlighted a team round of 13 over par and 301 shots that the Mountaineers only surpassed twice during the entire 2023-24 season.

Luke’s round of three birdies and three bogeys preceded a second round of 77 that resulted in a total score of 149 (5 over par), good for 31st place.

Makena Dubois started with a 2-over 74 and finished the match in 47th place with an 8-over total of 152, one stroke ahead of his teammate Layla Mericwho led the team with 76 in the last round.

Playing as a single player, redshirt freshman Salem Lee opened play with a 3-over 75 in just her fourth round of competition for App State. She finished with a total of 12 over.

Mary Sears Brown shot two 78s in her first round of competition for the Mountaineers since the 2022 Sun Belt Championship – she transferred to Longwood after that season and sat out last season when she returned to Boone. Jacquelyn Taylor also had an opening round of 78.

Georgia Southern, led by medalist Louise Reau, was one of two schools with a below-average overall score to win the team title.

The 2024-25 season is presented by the Hound Ears Club.
