Making Strides Against Cancer was founded in 1984 by Margery Gould Rath, a breast cancer survivor from Massachusetts, as a “participation marathon” to raise funds for the American Cancer Society. The event became officially known as American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer in 1993, and has since inspired millions of people to participate in events in communities across the country. Rath remained a passionate volunteer until her death in 2001.

This season-opening event brings together community leaders and survivors who will support Fort Wayne’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk, taking place on October 26. This is the 27th annual Strides Walk, and the American Cancer Society hopes to raise over $150,000 to end cancer as we know it for everyone.

There are many ways to get involved in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk, including:

Be part of the movement by registering for the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk. Community members can participate in saving lives, remembering loved ones, and funding the future of breast cancer research and programs by joining the largest and most influential breast cancer movement in the country. Through October, participants can raise funds to reach a suggested personal goal of $100 or more, then attend an event celebrating the effort.

Give hope to the Making Strides movement by supporting it. Participants can also become business leaders in their community to ensure local survivors and thrivers are celebrated and honored during Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Be the future by donating. Community members can also support the important work of the American Cancer Society by making a donation. Every dollar received will be dedicated to fighting breast cancer as we know it.
