Man charged in bar fight in Center Line

A Roseville man accused of punching and seriously injuring another man during a bar fight has been charged with assault, authorities said.

Joel Anthony Martinez, 48, was arraigned Monday in 37th District Court in Center Line and charged with aggravated assault (a misdemeanor punishable by one year in prison), battery punishable by 93 days in jail and disturbing the peace (a misdemeanor punishable by 90 days in jail), the Macomb County District Attorney’s Office said.

According to court records, a judge set bail for Martinez at $5,000 and scheduled his next court hearing for Sept. 18.

The judge also ordered that Martinez have no contact with the victim and wear an alcohol monitoring leash when he posts bail.

No attorney was listed for Martinez in court records Tuesday.

Authorities said Martinez harassed patrons at the Te Roma Bar in Center Line on Saturday.

He allegedly hit a 50-year-old man, causing the victim to fall and hit his head on the concrete.

Prosecutors said the victim was still in the intensive care unit of a hospital.

They also said Martinez allegedly hit a second man in the bar.

“The defendant’s actions during this alleged bar fight were reckless and dangerous and caused significant harm to the victim,” Macomb County Prosecutor Peter Lucido said in a statement. “We are committed to holding the defendant accountable for this allegedly violent conduct and ensuring justice is served for the victim.”
