Man charged with attempted theft of weapon after shooting in Evanston, Illinois

EVANSTON, Ill. (CBS) – Evanston police have arrested a man who allegedly tried to get rid of a gun used in a shooting last week.

On Monday, August 5, at around 8:30 p.m., two men shot each other after getting into an argument in the 1700 block of Dempster Streetnear Darrow Avenue. The victims, ages 41 and 50, were taken to the hospital where their condition was stabilized.

A short time later, police say Christopher Davis, 38, was seen driving around with a handgun used in the shooting. He was stopped by Evanston police officers as he drove away from the scene in a Volvo, police said.

The 9 mm Smith M&P pistol was located on the rear driver’s side of the car, police said. Davis was arrested but initially released, police said.

Police then obtained a search warrant for the car, which allowed them to recover the gun. Investigators learned that Davis was seen immediately after the shooting with a black handgun in his hand, just like the one in the car, police said.

Investigators determined Davis was not the one who fired the gun, but he tried to hide it from police. He was charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon by a felon and was in custody at the Cook County Jail as of Wednesday.

Another man – Sean Gayle, 41—is also on trial for the shooting. Gayle, the younger of the two men injured in the shooting, was charged with aggravated unlawful possession of a firearm.

In the meantime, Another shooting occurred in the same block busy Dempster Street at 3 p.m. the day after the shooting. Officers found a 34-year-old man with a gunshot wound to the thigh after being called to the scene. He was taken to a nearby hospital and his condition stabilized.

In connection with that shooting, which police said was unrelated to the shooting the night before, 33-year-old Jerell Williams was arrested and charged with attempted murder.

Police are also investigating a third shooting that occurred less than an hour after the second shooting.

Police said officers were called to the 1700 block of Dodge Avenue around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday where a 50-year-old man had been shot in the hand. An initial investigation revealed the victim accidentally shot himself in the hand and went to a home on Dodge Avenue to get help.
