The victim was identified as Mahesh Kant from Rudraprayag in Uttarakhand. He was a work supervisor with the company repairing the highway from Kherki Daula to Shahjahanpur.

The incident occurred at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday as Kant was supervising workers. A multi-ton grinding machine was reversing behind him, but Kant did not notice or hear it due to the extreme noise of several heavy machines on the site, police said. The machine operator also did not see Kant standing behind the machine, they added.

Other workers raised the alarm, but by the time the operator stopped the machine, Kant had already been crushed underneath, a senior police official said.

“The operator had to move the machine forward so that the workers could pull Kant out,” the official said. The contractors at the site arranged an ambulance and immediately rushed Kant to the public hospital in Gurugram Sector 10A, where he was declared dead, police said. “Kant sustained serious injuries at the accident site and probably died within minutes of the accident,” the official said.

Police said they were informed of the accident by hospital management and one of the staff members later informed Kant’s family.

Sandeep Kumar, spokesperson of Gurugram police, said they will take action against the machine operator. “He fled the spot after the accident. We have asked the contractor to share his contact details with us,” he added.

Based on a complaint by the victim’s younger brother Gajendra Kant, a first report was filed against the driver under sections 106 (culpable homicide) and 281 (reckless driving or driving on public roads) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita at Bilaspur police station on Friday. Kant’s body was handed over to his family after an autopsy.
