Manager positions are becoming increasingly sought after throughout the MLB

Only one other managerial situation is almost certain to change, and that is the unique case of 2023 Manager of the Year Skip Schumaker and the Marlins, who, at Schumaker’s request, agreed to drop the 2025 team option from Schumaker’s contract. That will be a loss for the Marlins.

With Scott Servais’ firing in Seattle on Thursday, two managers have been fired, after the White Sox and Pedro Grifol, and it would still be a surprise if everyone else except Schumaker stayed. Managers are not exactly known for their job security.

Here are some interesting scenarios (and some thoughts on possible replacements):

Hot stool (probable discharge)

1. Schumacher

He will find a better opportunity elsewhere, if not immediately, then soon.

2. Grady Sizemore, White Sox (interim)

Sizemore will likely stay in some role as he is popular with the players, but the team plans to look to outside recruits. AJ Pierzynski has been mentioned as a candidate. Jim Thome would be great, but he is busy with his son’s high school career. Rangers bench coach Will Venable is a more likely candidate.

Warm seat

3. John Schneider, Blue Jays

It seems that bosses Mark Shapiro and Ross Atkins will survive despite the disaster of 2024. If a scapegoat is needed, Schneider could be the right one, especially after their major disagreement following Jose Berrios’ early exit from the playoffs.

Pressure in the playoffs

4. Aaron Boone, Yankees

The general opinion is that he needs to win a play-off round, but his bosses love him.

5. Dave Roberts, Dodgers

The pressure seems real after the big winter buyouts, but Roberts is outstanding and they have the best record in MLB again.

A little heat

6. Carlos Marmol, Cardinals

It’s an average team playing average baseball, an improvement. Are management changes possible as well? Two great potential managerial replacements: Cardinals legend Yadier Molina and Schumaker.

7. Derek Shelton, Pirates

Popular with the bosses, which explains regular extensions. Will probably stay again.

8. David Bell, Reds

Their performance is below average, but he is also popular with his superiors.

Situational questions

9. Bud Black, Rocky Mountains

They have said there will be no news until after the year, but it is assumed that he has a permanent position unless he prefers a less important role.

10. Bruce Bochy, Rangers

The best October manager of all time is certainly not in trouble. He still has a year left and didn’t seem to like his part-time retirement, but with GM Chris Young still not renewing his contract after months of negotiations, that’s certainly questionable.

11. Brian Snitker, Braves

He’s doing very well to stay in the playoffs, but people assume he’ll leave when his contract runs out next year.
