Experience is the best teacher, and the experience that the six captains of this year’s Marshfield High football team had on the way to a Division 2 Super Bowl game last year taught them an important lesson.

That lesson? They want to do it all again and make that special trip to Gillette Stadium in December. And this time, they want to bring home some trophy as a reward for their hard work and sacrifice.

A quick look back

2023 was a pretty good season for the Rams. Losses to St. John’s Prep and Methuen early in the schedule paved the way to an eight-game winning streak. Marshfield then closed the season with losses to Duxbury on Thanksgiving and then to King Philip at Gillette Stadium in the Division 2 Super Bowl.

That eight-game winning streak was a work of art. It began with a 15-9 win over Mansfield, and the Rams’ incredibly fast and powerful offense took off from there. The next seven wins didn’t even come close to the game against the Hornets. The total win differential in those games was 193 points, or an average of 27.5 points per game.

Score goals, win, repeat

Marshfield’s six returning captains — Tor Maas, Alex Molander, Will Devine, Davin True, Brady Crowley and Tommy Bongiolatti — are ready to prove that last season’s success was no one-off. When the six gathered for the first practice of the season on Friday, they talked about what it will take to climb back to the top.

Alex Molander (Outside Linebacker) – “Our performance last year was all about chemistry. We focused on the basics as a team in practice and tried to be like brothers both on and off the field. We all worked hard to get stronger in the offseason and now we have to play with that chip on our shoulder to get back to where we want to be. To get as far as we did and not win is not something we want to do.”

Will Devine (Safety) – “Playing at Gillette was amazing. Everyone wants more. We played really well last year, but what I’ve noticed so far this year is that everyone has come back with even more intensity and commitment to the team.”

Tor Maas (Quarterback) – “I think the process we go through is the reason we can play so well. We practice just as hard as we do during a game and that translates to the field. The feeling we had after losing the last game is something I never want to feel again. That feeling will drive us to get back there this season and win it all this time.”

Davin True (running back) – “Playing against this defense every day in practice makes me a better football player. We all work as hard as we can to get to the point where the whole football team is playing as well as we can. We are all brothers and we make each other better football players.”

Brady Crowley (Tight End) – “We can do different things very well offensively. We can run and pass the ball really well and there are so many players that can contribute to the team in different ways. We are all ready to do what the coaches ask of us on the field to be successful.”

Tommy Bongiolatti (Offensive Guard) – “When you start youth football, you dream about what it will be like when you get to your senior year. Now it’s here and it’s amazing. I’m excited to see what this year brings. Our mindset last year was to play as a tough football team and we need to bring that back this year.”
