MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) – A Memphis lawmaker will speak at the Democratic National Convention about the epidemic of gun violence in America, the very issue that led to his expulsion from the Tennessee state legislature in 2023.
Representatives Justin J. Pearson of Memphis, Justin Jones of Nashville and Gloria Johnson of Knoxville ran into trouble with the Republican leadership of the House of Representatives when they called for new gun laws after the Covenant School shooting last year.
They are also known as the “Tennessee Three” and will be in the spotlight at the party convention on Thursday evening.
Pearson will speak on the main stage.
On Monday, he spoke to Action News 5 about his recipe for combating gun violence – the number one cause of death among children in America:
“The only way to find better solutions to (gun violence) is to have better politicians who truly prioritize the voices of voters and don’t want to silence the voices of elected politicians who are sworn to serve their constituents and do whatever they can to protect them.”
Pearson and other Tennessee Three lawmakers had the opportunity to hold talks with President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, who came to the state the week they were expelled from the House in 2023.
Pearson and Jones were reinstated immediately after their dismissal from the House of Representatives.
