METRO ART PRESENTS SPECIAL SCREENINGS, TALKS AND PERFORMANCES FROM THE OSCARS-WINNING DOCUMENTARY “THE LAST REPAIR SHOP”

The evening also includes live orchestral performances of songs from the film and an insightful conversation between featured instrument repair artists Dana Atkinson (strings) and Duane Michaels (woodwind), instrumentalist in study Ismerai Heels (saxophone) and editor of “The Last Repair Shop”, Nick Garnham Wright (Executive Creative Director, Breakwater Studios).

Once commonplace in the United StatesToday Los Angeles is by far the largest and one of the last American cities to have continuously provided its public school children with free and repaired musical instruments since 1959.

From the Oscar®-winning directing duo Kris Bowers And Ben Proudfoot“The Last Repair Shop” grants unrestricted access to the nondescript downtown warehouse where a dwindling handful of dedicated craftsmen keep over 80,000 student instruments in good condition.

Experience the profound life stories of four master craftsmen and students whose lives were changed by their instrument. In the repairmen’s stories, music was the common thread that healed their hearts and brought them to where they are now – repairing broken instruments to return them to the longing hands of Los Angeles’ Young people in public schools.

“As a former LAUSD student who found solace in the school’s musical instruments, producing this film is my heartfelt thanks to the unseen heroes who provide this creative outlet for students like me. As Ben and I heard the stories of these master artisans and the students they influenced, we were in awe of the power and importance of repair and how music can heal the parts of us that feel broken,” said Kris BowersCo-director of “The Last Repair Shop”.

“For us as a team of musicians, it has been an incredibly fulfilling and inspiring journey to be able to support ‘The Last Repair Shop’. Our founder, Peter Rotteris a LA native who began his musical journey in the LAUSD education system. To honor the critical role the LAUSD music programs have played in his own life, Peter supported this film as an executive producer and donated Encompass’ services to support the beautiful film score, which was written by Katya Richardson And Kris Bowers. We are so proud to have played a role in showing the world what Los Angeles residents have to offer and how accessible music education can enhance an entire community,” said Ayman KhanDevelopment Strategist at Encompass Music.

“‘The Last Repair Shop’ is a phenomenal story about the culture, musical talent and craftsmanship of the people of Los Angeles. What better place to continue showcasing this Oscar-winning film than Los Angeles Union Station?” said Heidi ZellerSenior Manager, Cultural Planning at Metro Art. “We look forward to providing a wonderful event for the community.”
