Mets pitcher is in danger of not returning if things don’t change soon

The New York Mets are currently in the middle of the race for a wildcard spot in the National League.

New York has been a surprise in the National League this season and there is a lot to like about it. The Mets currently have some question marks despite having a chance to return to the playoffs. New York’s bullpen has not been where it wanted to be,

The Mets currently have the 17th-ranked bullpen in baseball with a 4.05 ERA. There have been several players who have struggled this season, including veteran reliever Adam Ottavino. He has a 4.56 ERA in 50 appearances so far this season, and FanSided’s Michael Brakebill said he’s a Mets player on thin ice heading into the home stretch.

“Adam Ottavino was originally signed prior to the 2023 season after posting a spectacular 2.06 ERA in 2022,” Brakebill said. “Due to regression, he still impressed last season with a 3.21 ERA after returning on a one-year deal, but his 4.52 FIP suggested red flags were popping up under the hood. Those red flags have become evident as Ottavino’s actual ERA in 2024 is 4.56. He was better in the second half, but his 4.89 ERA in the first half hampered the team as his role in the late innings is critical to the success of the Mets bullpen.

“It’s hard to imagine the Mets bringing Ottavino back in the offseason, as his one good season in the last five years already feels like a thing of the past. He’ll be 39 next year, and his money off the books will be better spent finding younger and cheaper talent. It seems inevitable that the Mets and Ottavino will part ways this season.”

If he fails to turn things around, it wouldn’t be a big surprise if Ottavino left the Mets this offseason.
