Michael Rubin Confirms He Banned ‘Not Like Us’ From White Party With Drake On July 4th • Hollywood Unlocked

Michael Rubin has confirmed a recent rumor regarding his Fourth of July party. During an appearance at The Breakfast Club, he revealed that he instructed the DJ not to play Kendrick Lamar’s song “Not Like Us” while Drake was in attendance.

Rubin told the hosts that because of his long-standing friendship with Drake, he would never invite him to an event where that song could potentially make him feel uncomfortable. “It was true,” Rubin explained. “I just didn’t think it was appropriate, so I said, ‘Hey, let’s not play anybody’s music here that’s at odds with anybody.’ That was my decision. I felt like it wasn’t the right thing to do.”

Responding to a viral photo showing Drake looking dejected at the party, Rubin clarified that Drake was actually enjoying himself. “Look, Drake is an iconic artist that we all have a lot of respect for. What I said to Drake, and I truly believe this, is that this is a huge test for him. You can’t get to where he is without people rooting for you.”

He added: “I sleep with one eye open. I know we have three companies right now. Every day I have people coming at me from every company and that’s part of success because with success comes more competition, more hate and you know the best people show why they’re the best and if you’re not the best you break and fall apart. So I think this is a great test for him. I think he’s going to come out with a lot of incredible music.”

Despite being confronted with the lyrics of Kendrick Lamar’s diss track, Drake has continued his career undeterred. He even referenced the song in one post, saying, “Sometimes you gotta come out,” quoting the now-viral line, “Sometimes you gotta come out and show them n****s.”

Rubin hosts his party every year on the 4th of July and brings together megastars such as Beyoncé and Jay-Z, Kim Kardashian, Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Brady and many more.
