Former President Barack Obama and his wife, former First Lady Michelle Obama, took center stage on the second night of the 2024 Democratic National Convention. In speeches that primarily conveyed a message of hope for the country’s future, the Obamas supported and celebrated presidential candidate Kamala Harris and her running mate Tim Walz while criticizing their opponent Donald Trump.
“Donald Trump has done everything in his power to make people afraid of us,” Michelle said in a now-viral moment of her speech. “He has used ugly, misogynistic, racist lies as a substitute for real ideas and solutions that would actually improve people’s lives.”

“I want to know who is going to tell him that the job he is currently seeking might be one of those ‘black jobs,'” she joked, referring to Trump’s false claims that immigrants are being hired for so-called “black jobs.”
And while the stadium cheered and took inspiration from Michelle’s moving speech, some viewers, including those at home, noticed an important detail: she was wearing braids! Along with a statement navy blue jumpsuit by Monse, Michelle wore a side-parted braided ponytail that reached her waist.
As a reminder, Michelle has been open in the past about wearing her hair straight during her husband’s presidency. “Let me wear my hair straight,” she said of her attitude during her book tour for The light we carry: Overcoming uncertain timesper WashingtonPost“Let’s pass health care reform.”

Although she stuck to this rule for eight years, Michelle now seems to have officially started a new chapter. And the good news: her fans are thrilled!

“I just have to say… Michelle Obama wearing braids during the DNC is a visible example of the evolution of hair in American politics,” echoed another. “Michelle Obama wearing braids for the DNC. Shouldn’t be a big deal but is huge,” reminded another X-user. “I LOVE this. Love, love, love, love.”
If the country wants to elect the first black woman to head the White House, let’s not let a few braids scare us away, let’s stand up for her!
