Michigan win or national championship in 2024?

play

With the 2024 Ohio State season quickly approaching, it’s time for football fans to get their priorities in order.

Which do you think would be better: Ohio State beat Michigan for the first time since 2019 but miss out on the national championship, or Ohio State lose its fourth consecutive meeting with rival Wolverines but finish the season with the College Football Playoff national championship trophy?

Consider this scenario: Ohio State wins 11 games, loses to Michigan, but takes the championship. That’s the result of The Dispatch’s season simulation using EA Sports College Football 25. Would that make fans happy? Tell us in our poll. (We know you probably want to choose “both,” but that would make it too easy.)

Could Ohio State win the national championship if Michigan loses?

Ohio State’s chances of winning a national championship by losing to rival Michigan have increased dramatically.

In 2024, the College Football Playoff will expand to 12 teams. The top four seeds – each of which will be conference champions – will receive a first-round bye. The other eight teams will play in the first round at the higher-seeded team’s home stadium.

According to the final College Football Playoff rankings for the 2023 season, four teams in the top 12 had one loss – Texas, Alabama, Georgia and Ohio State – while five teams in the top 12 had two losses: Oregon, Missouri, Penn State, Mississippi and Oklahoma.

According to the 2023 rankings, Ohio State would have been seeded 7th in the expanded College Football Playoff.
