Juggling multiple Microsoft Teams accounts for work and personal use should no longer be a problem after the company announced the official launch of its combined app.
The video conferencing service has confirmed the launch of its new “unified” Microsoft Teams for users on Windows 11, Windows 10 and Mac.
The update was first announced in March 2024 and means that from now on, all users will be able to access the same app, regardless of whether they have a work, school or personal Microsoft Teams account, eliminating the previous requirement for multiple versions for different use cases.
Unified Microsoft Teams app
“Microsoft Teams has transformed the way we connect and collaborate at work and in our lives,” wrote Amit Fulay, vice president of product at Microsoft, in a blog post announcing the news.
“We’re excited to announce that the unified Teams app is available today for Windows 11, Windows 10, and Mac. This update brings work, personal, and education accounts together in a single Teams app.”
As shown in the image above, users can switch between accounts or add new ones by selecting their profile picture in the top right corner after logging into Microsoft Teams.
Users with multiple Teams accounts will also have the ability to select their preferred account when joining a meeting, as well as the option to join as a guest without even having to log into the platform.
According to Microsoft, the update is now rolling out and desktop users will be updated automatically.
Previously, users had to choose between a “Teams for home” and a “Teams for work or school” – or install both, which potentially led to confusion.
This news is the latest in a series of major upgrades for Teams, and comes shortly after the platform announced a new feature that will allow administrators to permanently ban a user from a workspace or organization.
The new addition is not only a useful cybersecurity tool, but could also help stamp out any misuse of the platform or block people who have left a company and may want to continue to access it for nefarious purposes.
