Six years after acquiring Flipgrid (now Flip), Microsoft will shut down the standalone app for the education-focused video service. Flip offered educators a way to send videos to students organized into groups and topics. The app has been around in some form since 2012, albeit under different names. Now Microsoft will shut down the app and migrate its core features to Teams for Education.
Microsoft has moved Flip to view-only mode on July 1, 2024. Users will be able to download their content but will not be able to create new videos. This option will remain until September 30 of this year, after which all videos and data will be deleted. Microsoft describes the process of shutting down Flip on a support page.
“To streamline the number of apps educators need to use in their classroom and integrate Flip into more natural task rhythms, we have moved some of the key Flip features to Teams for Education and will retire our website and mobile apps by September 30, 2024,” Microsoft said.

Removing the Flip app and migrating core functionality to Teams for Education is intended to streamline the user experience. Switching between fewer apps should make things a little easier, but only if you’re already in the Teams for Education ecosystem. In the FAQ section of the help site, Microsoft’s answer to the question “My school doesn’t use Teams for Education and I want to try the Flip camera option in Teams. What do I need to do?” is essentially “Use Teams for Education.”
There are also some features that will not be added to Teams for Education, including commenting, mixtapes, and augmented reality.
Microsoft has several resources to help users migrate to Flip features in Teams for Education. For example, learn how to create a Flip video in Teams or create a space to share Flip videos.
Students and teachers will be able to view Flip content until September 30. The ability to download content will also remain until that date. On October 1, 2024, Microsoft will delete videos and other data, giving students and teachers a little over a month to retrieve any content they need to save.
