Midland, Ontario: Water pipe burst leads to boil water advisory

A burst water pipe in the early hours of the morning in the East Midlands forced the health authority to issue a boil water advisory.

The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit (SMDHU) issued a boil water advisory for the eastern pressure zone of Midland following a recent major water main burst on Monday.

The break occurred at the east end of Midland in an area between Yonge Street and Highway 12 and William and King Streets.

While repairs are underway, the warning will remain in effect until laboratory tests confirm the water is safe.

“These results are expected to be available in the next one to two days,” the health authority said in a press release.

The health authority points out that older people, very young people and people with weakened immune systems are most at risk.

Residents in the Midlands are asked to boil their water before use or alternatively use bottled water or commercially treated water from an approved source.

This also applies to the drinking water of pets.

Restaurants, bars and other food services (except establishments selling pre-packaged food and licensed to operate by SMDHU) are closed during the boil water advisory.

To prepare water for use, bring it to a boil for at least one minute and allow it to cool before:

  • Drink
  • Brushing teeth or rinsing dentures
  • Preparing food, washing fruit, vegetables and other foods
  • Preparation of infant formula
  • Production of ice cream, drinks or other mixed drinks
  • Dishwashing: Wash dishes with soap and water, rinse, and then disinfect in a separate sink with a capful of bleach mixed with a sink full of clean water.
