Minnesota residents affected by flooding may receive extensions to file taxes

Minnesota residents affected by flooding this summer are eligible for an extension to file their tax returns, the Minnesota Department of Revenue said Wednesday.

The extension applies to residents and business owners who suffered losses in the following counties: Blue Earth, Cook, Cottonwood, Faribault, Freeborn, Goodhue, Itasca, Jackson, Lake, Le Sueur, Mower, Nicollet, Nobles, Rice, Rock, St. Louis, Steele, Waseca and Watonwan.

Affected taxpayers in the counties whose tax returns or payments are due between June 16 and July 4 in Minnesota will not have to pay penalties or interest if they apply for a forgiveness before November 1, 2024, the agency said.

The extension only applies to state taxes.

Reviews in progress

In some counties in Minnesota, the full extent of the damage is not yet known.

In St. Louis County, assessors visited 716 private properties where damage was reported and inspected 1,973 buildings as part of these investigations.

In 374 of the buildings examined on 332 individual properties, damage was found to an extent that justified a property tax reduction.

The estimated amount of building damage to private property owners so far totals $11.8 million.

At the end of July, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) announced that it had approved additional assistance for residents of the 19 counties of Minnesota affected by severe storms and flooding.
