Magnet logoLong Branch, NJ, August 28, 2024 – On August 12, Monmouth Medical Center (MMC) learned that it had been designated as a Magnet with distinction® Hospital for Excellence in Nursing by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) and is the first hospital in New Jersey and the eleventh in the country to receive the Magnet with distinction.

Based on validated empirical data, this new “with distinction” designation raises the bar for recognizing top-notch organizations around the world that have achieved the highest level of quality care. Monmouth Medical Center is the first hospital in the state to achieve this elite level of performance.

In 2020, MMC was recognized as a Magnet Recognized organization by the ANCC for the first time, proudly joining the global community of organizations that hold this prestigious designation for nursing excellence. Magnet recognition, which fewer than 10% of U.S. hospitals receive, is the highest and most prestigious honor a healthcare organization can receive for excellence in nursing.

The Chair of the Magnet Recognition Program Commission, Sharon Pappas, RN, PhD, NEA-BC, announced that in addition to the Magnet with distinction Honor, MMC received eight copies based on components of the magnet model.

“Commissioner Pappas noted that this comprehensive recognition of our excellence – an increase from the outstanding seven examples we received in 2020 – puts us in a special position,” said Eric Carney, president and CEO of MMC and Monmouth Medical Center Southern Campus in Lakewood. “This would not have been possible without the tremendous teamwork of our nursing staff and the extensive support of our medical staff and boards of trustees. Our designation as a Magnet with Distinction allows us to be among the model organizations nationwide for nursing excellence while creating an environment of care that improves patient outcomes.”

“The Magnet designation is the gold standard and a true affirmation of the highest standard of care,” added Chief Nursing Officer Ann Szapor. “It is comprehensive recognition of the outstanding work of our nurses, who work with the entire hospital team to ensure that every patient receives the best possible care, every day, around the clock.”

“On behalf of the nursing leadership, we are thrilled to receive this important recognition at Monmouth Medical Center,” said Nancy Holecek, MAS, MHA, BSN, RN, FNAP, executive vice president and chief nursing officer of RWJBarnabas Health. “This outstanding new award is a testament to the dedication of our nurses and their commitment to providing world-class patient care. We will continue to strive for innovation and excellence in everything we do to ensure our patients receive the best care possible.”
