More information released on Calgary Feeder main line repairs – DiscoverAirdrie.com

During today’s water update, Michael Thompson, General Manager of Infrastructure Services for the City of Calgary, explained that additional repairs to the main supply line will be made during the stage four outdoor water restrictions.

“After further review of the pipe divers’ findings, we will be making repairs to a total of 21 sections on 33rd and 16th Avenues. We will do those repairs first, then two more sections of pipe will be repaired on Parkdale Boulevard and near Crowchild Trail. We have increased the number of pipe sections to be repaired because there are other repairs in addition to the urgent repairs that are currently needed, and we are taking care of all of them at the same time.”

Crews are on site today to mark the route of the main line. Thompson said there will likely be 16 to 18 excavation sites.

“This is our current plan, but it is important to note that it may change as we continue our work as we expose the pipe and examine its physical condition.”

The majority of the repair work will be done between August 26 and September 23 to allow for restrictions to be lifted. Shortly after restrictions are lifted, work will begin on the two sections of pipe on Parkdale Boulevard and near Crowchild Trail, as restrictions are not required for these repairs.

“Now that we have identified the exact sections of pipe to be repaired, construction crews are developing their work sequencing plans to best complete the work. Next week we will provide more details on how the work will proceed and how we will proceed to complete the repairs in the most efficient manner.”

Just yesterday, the City of Airdrie announced that it would follow the City of Calgary’s lead and move to stage four of outdoor restrictions on August 26.

Due to level four restrictions, residents in Airdrie are not allowed to:

  • Lawns, gardens, trees and shrubs can also be irrigated using methods other than rainwater.
  • Wash all exterior surfaces, including building exteriors, windows, sidewalks, driveways and walkways, unless your business requires it for health and safety reasons.
  • Wash cars on driveways or streets.
  • For filling decorative outdoor elements, fountains, pools or whirlpools.
  • Use drinking water for construction purposes such as leveling, compaction or dust control

In addition, residents will most likely be urged to take steps to conserve water indoors, including:

  • Only use the dishwasher and washing machine when necessary and only with a full load.
  • Turn off the tap when brushing your teeth or shaving.
  • Limit showers to five minutes or less and keep baths shallow.
  • Scrape plates clean instead of rinsing off leftover food.
  • Turn off humidifiers and ice machines, postpone car washing,
  • Businesses that use large amounts of non-essential water, such as laundromats and car washes, are asked to reduce their water consumption.
  • Businesses that use water to provide life-sustaining products or services to humans and animals are exempt from the rule. Further exemptions apply to businesses that use water to meet health standards, such as health centers and restaurants.

Recreational facilities, Genesis Place and arenas will remain open during stage four water restrictions.

Currently, Stage 1 outdoor restrictions remain in place in Calgary and Airdrie.
