More than 12,000 inactive voters in Ouachita Parish, how to get active again

MONROE, Louisiana (KNOE) – The list of inactive voters in Ouachita Parish has grown after the post office returned a large number of voter information cards to the Registrar of Voters.

The Elections Office reported that as of August 8, more than 12,000 Ouachita Parish residents had inactive voter status.

As of Thursday (August 8), exactly 12,030 registered voters in Ouachita Parish were registered as inactive voters.

The voter information card contains information such as your voting location and whether your address has changed. Each district that represents your address is listed on this map.

“This would be your polling place, and then all these boxes down here — these are your precincts, and it tells you what each precinct in the parish is — what the precinct number is,” said Ouachita Parish elections official Isabelle Butler as she held up the map. “If your congressional district changes, it would tell you your new number here; and the Supreme Court — what your new number is.”

When the voter registrar receives your voter information card back, they will generate something called Address confirmation notification automatically, which gives you the opportunity to update your status to an active voter.

“This is the front of the card and this is the back of the card, but these cards come in an envelope that is folded in half like this. So if you have a voter information card, it will come in an envelope like this. Even if your address is correct, please mail it back to us. This will verify the information that we receive,” Butler said.

Butler said when you go to the precinct to vote, you have to fill out a pink sheet labeled Address confirmation card – election day.

“You have to fill out this form because on your precinct registration – where your name is – it has ‘address verification required’ stamped in that place. So you have to fill out this form and the election commissioners have to insist that you fill it out before you can vote,” Butler explained.

Citizens can also update their information through the voter portal on the GeauxVote mobile app or at geauxvote.com.
