“Most embarrassing expulsion?” Player receives red card for urinating at Copa Peru match

A player was sent off at the Copa Peru for urinating in the middle of the match. The bizarre incident occurred during a clash between Atletico Awajun and Cantorcillo FC at the La Gran Saposoa stadium.

In the 71st minute of the match, Awajun was awarded a corner kick. However, the action on the field was stopped for a few moments as Cantorcillo goalkeeper Lucho Ruiz was receiving medical attention after an injury. While all this was happening, Sebastian Munoz was spotted standing alone at the corner flag, about to take the free kick for Awajun and waiting for the match to resume.

Realizing that the opposing goalkeeper would need some time to get back on his feet, Munoz decided to urinate on the sideline. His behavior caught the attention of the referee, who immediately showed him the red card, perhaps because he considered it unsportsmanlike conduct. Munoz initially seemed baffled and kept asking the referee about his offense. The referee ignored his request and asked Munoz to leave the field.

The moment was captured by the broadcaster’s camera. The video was later posted on X (formerly Twitter) with the caption: “Is this the most embarrassing sending off ever? From the Copa Peru. A red card that has to be seen to be believed.”

This was not the first time a football player received a red card for urinating during a match. Something similar happened in early 2017 when Salford City goalkeeper Max Crocombe was sent off during a match against Bradford City AFC.

His offence was initially unclear, with the English club announcing on X: “Red card! Crocombe sees red for something off the ball. Nobody has any idea what happened.”

The opposing team later clarified this in a social media post. “We can confirm that Crocombe was sent off for urinating during the game. This is not a joke,” Bradford City AFC confirmed on X.

There have been several cases where players were spared despite their behavior. During a 2009 Champions League match, Stuttgart goalkeeper Jens Lehmann peed against the advertising boards during the game, according to a report by NPR. However, he managed to return to the field in time and his action went unnoticed.
