Motorists are warned about overlooked car part that could cost more than £100 to repair

Motorists have been warned about an “often overlooked” car part that can lead to a failure in a vehicle inspection. The fuel cap, which seals the tank after filling it with petrol or diesel, prevents dangerous fumes from escaping.

Many drivers don’t think twice about filling up their vehicle, but one expert has stressed that even minor damage can cause major problems during the annual vehicle safety inspection, reports Wales Online.

Graham Conway of Select Van Leasing explains: “There are numerous things that can cause you to fail an MOT and have to book expensive repair work before a re-test. But there are also some smaller things that are particularly annoying when they show up in the ‘failure’ column – including broken lightbulbs and worn wiper blades.”

“One of the most commonly ignored items is the fuel filler cap, which despite regular use is barely noticed by most drivers. Modern cars and vans have spring-loaded fuel filler caps that self-seal once the fuel nozzle is removed. However, if they break or the rubber seal around them is damaged, fumes can escape and pose a real danger. It’s easy to understand why it’s on the MOT checklist.”

“And you may also see a warning light on your dashboard telling you that there is something wrong with your car’s evaporative emissions control (EVAP) system, which prevents harmful fumes from entering the atmosphere. It’s normal to smell some fuel when you fill up, but if it persists and is sometimes noticeable even with the gas cap closed, it’s definitely worth getting the problem fixed.”

Not only is ignoring the problem dangerous, it can also be expensive. A MOT costs around £54, so if you have to reschedule after repairs have been carried out, the bill for the inspection alone will be well into the three figures.

In addition, drivers would have to get the problem fixed immediately, depriving them of the opportunity to shop around for the best prices. Mr Conway, from Select Van Leasing, explained some commonly overlooked factors that lead to MOT failures.

He explained: “Topping up the windscreen washer fluid is one of the simpler maintenance jobs on a car and a bottle costs just £2. But not doing it will lead to failure. Halford’s will replace and fit new wiper blades for less than £20, so it would be foolish to ignore old, streaky and squeaky wiper blades which will also ruin your chances of passing an MOT.”

“Similarly, frayed seatbelts, broken license plate lights and even air fresheners dangling from your rearview mirror can cause problems and cost money. Of course, the best ways to ensure you pass your MOT without issues are to fix any problems that arise and follow the manufacturer’s recommended maintenance program. However, as your inspection approaches, it’s also a good idea to go through the checklist to see if there are things you can do in advance – like replacing bulbs and tires – that will help your vehicle pass the inspection with ease.”
