MU closes Conley Avenue parking garage for repairs

COLUMBIA, Missouri (KMIZ) –

The University of Missouri will close a 2,000-space parking garage on campus for repairs on Saturday.

The school announced in a news release Saturday afternoon that it would close the Conley Avenue parking garage at 511 Conley Avenue “following a recent inspection and as part of an ongoing effort to extend the life of parking garages on campus.” Christopher Ave of the MU News Bureau told ABC 17 News Saturday he did not know how long the repairs would take.

The release said any cars still in the garage by 8 a.m. Monday, Aug. 19, would be towed to another location on campus at no charge. Owners would be contacted directly, the release said. The school said students with parking permits for the Conley Ave. garage would be moved to the Turner Avenue or Hitt Street parking garages. Staff and faculty with parking permits would be moved to the same garages, “depending on where they work.”

Records obtained by ABC 17 News show inspectors have warned the school about deteriorating cable barriers in several garages, including the Conley Ave. garage. A July 29 report from Structural Engineering Associates found that the cables in the Conley Ave. and University Ave. garages had “deteriorated at an accelerated rate” since the last inspections and recommended they be removed and replaced later this year.

A photo from the Structural Engineering Associates report shows the cable wear.

Ave did not specify what the repairs would include. The maintenance report states that the Conley Ave. garage has 2,058 parking spaces.
