Nancy Pelosi criticizes Republicans for attack on Tim Walz

Former Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) took action against Republicans who criticized Tim Walz about his claims regarding his military service by them of dishonesty. “They make things up,” she said.

Walz served in the Army National Guard for 24 years, but left in 2005 to pursue a political career. Before leaving, he was deployed to Italy to support the U.S. war effort in Afghanistan, but was never deployed in combat.

He faced criticism after he claimed in a 2018 video that he carried weapons “in war” and for misrepresenting his rank.

During a Sunday interview with Jen PsakiPelosi responded to the controversy by claiming that, in reality, Walz’s Republican critics were dishonest, arguing that the attacks on Walz were a “sign of the bankruptcy” of Republican ideas.

PSAKI: He served in the National Guard for 24 years. He was the ranking member of Congress. I was the ranking member of Congress when he was in Congress and did a tremendous amount of work on the Veterans Affairs Committee. What do you say to these attempts to attack his military career?

PELOSI: Well, first of all, it’s a sign of the bankruptcy of their ideas. They have everything to say, so they make things up. So, first of all, he was in the National Guard for 20 years. But then 9/11 happened. So he signed up for another four years. He retired from the service to run for Congress months before his unit was deployed. So it happened after he left. So they’re just trying to confuse things. But he came into Congress and was respected by our colleagues, was elected the ranking Democrat on the Veterans Affairs Committee, where he made historic progress for veterans along with Chad Edwards on the Budget Committee and him on the Appropriations Committee, meeting their needs more than had been done since the GI Bill in World War II.
