National Hurricane Center monitoring system as hurricane season reaches its peak

TAMPA, Fla. – As we approach the peak of the Atlantic hurricane season (September 10), the National Hurricane Center estimates there is a 40% chance of a system developing and moving toward the Caribbean.

Denis Phillips, chief meteorologist at ABC Action News, said it “looks like a low pressure system could form in this region over the weekend or early next week. That system would move WNW into the Caribbean next week.”

Phillips’ rule number 7 still applies here: Don’t panic.

Referring to the ensemble models that frequently appear on social media, Phillips said, “There is no need to worry in the next week.”

“As you would expect, things are getting livelier now that we are reaching the peak of the season,” Phillips said. “As always, we have to keep an eye on everything that is developing in the Caribbean. And that is exactly what we will do. There is no need to worry at the moment… just check back from time to time for updates.”

NOAA’s last updated forecast from mid-August predicted 17 to 25 named storms, 8 to 13 hurricanes, and 4 to 7 major hurricanes.

There have been five named storms so far this season.
