Naugatuck United Methodist Church provides free clothing to flood victims

NAUGATUCK, Connecticut (WFSB) – After the devastation caused by the flood, several community groups and organizations are helping with physical and emotional rebuilding.

Tiffany Cardoso is one of many in Naugatuck still picking up the storm’s aftermath, but she knows others are far worse off than her.

“I feel terribly sorry that people have lost their homes and everything. That’s why I want to help with every little thing I can do,” Cardoso said.

She arrived with bags full of clothing and was one of many who donated to the Naugatuck United Methodist Church clothing drive.

“I had a pile of clothes that I wanted to take to Goodwill, so it definitely felt better to donate to that cause,” Cardoso said.

The church normally runs a second-hand shop on weekends, but now it is running a collection drive to provide free clothing to flood victims.

“Many people have lost everything. If we could provide them with shoes and clothing, that would be wonderful,” said Debbie Johansen of Naugatuck United Methodist Church.

The campaign received donations from people in Naugatuck, Oxford and surrounding communities ranging from clothing and jewelry to books and board games for all ages.

“We’re still processing the shock, but I know our shock is not as great as that of the people affected. We had to do something and I’m glad we’re helping someone,” said Ethel Grant, mission director of Naugatuck United Methodist Church. “I’m just happy when I can help, especially in a disaster like this. I want to help in any little way I can.”

The church will carry out this action for the next three days.
