New pilot program for vehicle emissions remediation aims to provide financial assistance and protect air quality

The Vermont Dept. of Environmental Conservation (DEC) is launching the Automotive Emissions Repair Assistance Program pilot with partner repair shops in Shelburne and Bennington, the state announced August 19.

As a small-scale pilot project, this program will assist low-income vehicle owners with the repairs needed to pass the emissions portion of the annual state inspection. The pilot project may provide funds for vehicle emissions system repairs covering up to 50% of the vehicle’s market value, with a maximum limit of $2,500. Examples of eligible repairs include repairing a broken catalytic converter or replacing a sensor.

“In a rural state like Vermont, owning and properly maintaining a vehicle can be costly,” said DEC Commissioner Jason Batchelder. “This important program will not only reduce transportation costs for those who can least afford it, but it will also protect public health and air quality for all Vermonters.”

Malfunctioning vehicle emissions control systems can cause poor engine performance, rough idling, and loss of power. Vehicles with these malfunctions emit more air pollutants that can pose health risks, damage forests and crops, and cause haze. Vermont has adopted the most stringent vehicle emissions standards, but a vehicle will not meet those standards unless its emissions control systems are properly maintained.
