New police and fire training center in Hamilton County moves forward

Plans are moving forward for a new public safety training center in Hamilton County, and officials say the facility will allow firefighters to more easily train for emergencies in multi-story buildings as construction progresses.

“We are going to save lives,” said Tim Griffin, a Hamilton County Council member and firefighter with the Carmel Fire Department.

Plans for the facility cleared a major hurdle last week when the city of Carmel agreed to use county tax increment financing funds generated in an area incorporated into the city to finance part of the project.

The design and cost of the project still need final approval from Hamilton County Council, but construction is expected to begin later this year. It will be built on 160th Street in Noblesville, where there is an existing, smaller training center.

The new facility will make it easier for Hamilton County firefighters to train on fires in multi-story, mixed-use buildings because it includes a training tower and offers the opportunity for live-fire training, Griffin said.

The new training center will allow firefighters, police departments and the county’s emergency management agency to train together and prepare for major disasters. The new facility will include firing ranges, classrooms and some offices, Griffin said.

“It will save the lives of police officers and firefighters because they will be even better prepared, but it will also save the lives of our citizens,” Griffin said.
