New Student Success Center opens this fall – The Signpost

Following the recent closure of several cultural centers at Weber State University, the new Student Success Center has opened. The Student Success Center works to create a campus culture that supports the needs of individual students so they can achieve their academic and personal goals.

Although there has been a Student Success Center in the past, this new center was built from the ground up with new goals while still incorporating the goals of the existing centers. Over the course of this summer, the Student Success Center has worked hard to develop an identity and a clear vision to provide students with the support they need.

An important aspect of the Student Success Center is the programming it offers. Through experienced coaches and program managers, this division of the center motivates students to reach their full potential by setting achievable goals and building self-confidence.

Brandon Flores, executive director of the Student Success Center, believes that students who are involved on their campus have a stronger connection to the institution, which encourages them to learn and gives them a sense of belonging. This can be achieved through the programs and activities offered.

As for activities, the center currently has a community barbecue planned for September 12. The center is currently developing a series of activities for Hispanic Heritage Month in September and October. Flores wants to continue to organize events where students can socialize and network with faculty, staff and professionals.

“We encourage everyone to come out, learn about the culture, make new friends and participate in social and academic opportunities,” Flores said.

The center offers navigation advisors. These advisors are here to help students collaborate and navigate higher education.

“What sets us apart is our holistic advice, but our support is also very targeted and tailored to the individual needs of each student,” said Flores.

Over the course of the next semester, Flores aims to build a solid foundation for the Student Success Center staff. Creating a solid foundation for the center’s internal mechanisms is a top priority so students receive the best support possible. The center also wants to show that its help benefits Weber State by producing professionals who can enter the workforce after graduation.

The Student Success Center is currently redesignating the Student Associate position. The new name is Student Success Advocates and this position is now available for students who want to help bring the student body on campus closer together.

The Student Success Center is located in the Student Services Center, Suites 150 and 160, and is available to anyone who would like to stop by and utilize the services offered or schedule an appointment with a counselor. The space offers amenities such as areas for students to study, computers, printers, and a snack bar, which is currently under construction.

“We want students to come here and feel at home away from home,” Flores said.
