News at the University of Arizona for the new academic year

TUCSON, Arizona (13 News) – The 2024 school year has begun for students at the University of Arizona, and it brings with it some new changes for students as well as some tips.

Security

The UAPD would like to remind students that there are many different ways to stay safe on campus. Property theft is the most common type of crime committed on campus, including stolen bikes. You can register your bike here and check out more safety tips from the UAPD.

Andrew Weil Center for Integrative Medicine

New this year is the Andrew Weil Center for Integrative Medicine. The new building is located on Mountain Ave. near Speedway Blvd. and the center’s director, Dr. Stephen Dahmer, tells 13 News that Tucson is in many ways the birthplace of integrative medicine and this new building will help attract new students.

Dr. Dahmer adds that it has been decades in the making and that facilities include a recharging room and an interactive kitchen. For more information, see the full website here.

Pride of Arizona

The Pride of Arizona also have some new additions that they will be introducing this year. They have new uniforms that you can see at the first football game on August 25th against New Mexico, and they will also have a new drum section.

The band also won the 2024 Sudler Trophy. The Pride of Arizona is the fifth band west of the Mississippi to win the award, and assistant music director and director of athletic bands Chad Shoopman told the LA Times it’s comparable to winning the Heisman Trophy for college bands.

This year the band includes students from over 100 different disciplines.

District for Student Success

Something that is not new but still current on campus is the Student Success District. Completed in spring 2022, it consists of the renovated Main Library, the renovated Bear Down Gym, which now offers space for students to work, the Bartlett Academic Success Center, and the Weaver Science and Engineering Library, which is also part of the district.

Building for applied research

The Applied Research Building is the second newest building on campus and was designed to provide testing facilities for all types of space missions. The building includes a thermo-vacuum chamber that allows researchers to simulate all possible environments in space.

Signs of the solar system

Staying on the theme of space, there is a new 1.5 billion scale Solar System exhibit across campus that will give you an idea of ​​the size of the solar system and provide details about the planets.

It begins near the Flandrau Science Center and Planetarium and continues to the wall near the main gate near University Blvd. But soon it will extend even further after a plaque featuring Pluto is installed near First Avenue and University Blvd.
