NJ Transit fare holiday: Starting Monday, all trains and buses will be free for a week

NEW JERSEY (WABC) — Good news for commuters in New Jersey: Fare waivers for all New Jersey Transit buses and trains begin Monday.

Due to the fare exemption, all fees for all means of transport will be waived from Monday, August 26th to September 2nd.

If you have already purchased a monthly pass, you will not miss out on the savings. These customers will automatically receive a 25% discount on the purchase of their monthly pass for September via the mobile app, at ticket vending machines (TVMs) or at ticket counters.

It’s a way of saying “thank you” to the hundreds of thousands of loyal NJ Transit riders, especially when service has not met their expectations or been inadequate.

“Knowing that our commuters have faced many disruptions this summer, we are providing NJ Transit riders with a one-week fare waiver,” said Governor Phil Murphy. “As we work diligently with Amtrak to investigate and resolve the issues that arose this summer, particularly on the Northeast Corridor, we hope this fare waiver will provide some relief for our commuters. We also encourage New Jerseyans to take advantage of this opportunity, and we remain grateful to the many New Jerseyans who rely on public transportation.”

Many of the recent service disruptions have occurred on Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor (NEC). NJ Transit says it has worked tirelessly to advance the joint plan with Amtrak, announced immediately after Murphy’s meeting with NJ Transit and Amtrak leadership in June, to improve service on the crucial rail line – the busiest corridor in the country.

About $66 billion of the federal infrastructure bill is earmarked for upgrades that will take years to complete.

NJ Transit states that while the root causes of these incidents have not yet been identified, important short-term actions have been taken and notable progress has been made.

Amtrak has increased its inspection and repair efforts, and NJ Transit is increasing inspections of equipment on platforms.
