North Carolina Education Lottery raises half a billion dollars to repair public schools

RALEIGH, NC (WITN) – Struggling public schools across the state are now set to receive funding from the North Carolina Education Lottery after it raised more than $1 billion in two years.

The Education Lottery has announced that it has raised more than $1 billion in fiscal year 2024 for the second year in a row, more than half of which will help rebuild and repair damaged public schools across the state.

The press release states that the allocation will coincide with the North Carolina General Assembly’s state budget as additional funding for North Carolina public schools.

“New schools are helping North Carolina students get ahead,” said Mark Michalko, the lottery’s executive director. “Across the state, parents and educators are telling us stories about the impact of the new schools. They say the new schools and classrooms are creating spaces where students enjoy coming to school every day.”

One of the six highlighted schools that have already received lottery aid was the Wilson Academy of Applied Technology in Wilson County.

The rest of the funds raised will go to other areas of education, according to the lottery. Examples include college scholarships, school system costs for staff and transportation, and affordable preschool programs.
