Northwest Orthopaedic Specialists opens second surgery center in Spokane Valley

Northwest Orthopaedic Specialists PS has completed renovations of a new outpatient surgery center in Spokane Valley, expanding its capacity to provide orthopedic and interventional pain management services, says Trisha Bruininks, marketing specialist for the physician-owned group.

The 35,000-square-foot ambulatory surgery center is located on the first floor of the NWOS Spokane Valley campus at 12410 E. Sinto, just west of Multicare Valley Hospital, and is an extension of the facility’s in-house service offerings, which include an orthopedic clinic, an express outpatient clinic, an MRI room and a physical and hand therapy room.

“This is an exciting expansion for us because there are many people in Spokane Valley and the entire region who can benefit from interventional pain management,” Bruininks says. “For some patients who may not be able to have general anesthesia, this can be more cost-effective, safer and less risky.”

The outpatient surgery center has two treatment rooms and is certified by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care, Bruininks says.

One treatment room is dedicated to patients seeking interventional pain management treatments, which include epidural steroid injections, spinal cord stimulation, and peripheral nerve blocks. The second treatment room is dedicated to hand and wrist surgeries using the WALANT method, which stands for Wide-Awake Local Anesthesia No Tourniquet. Surgeries that can be performed using this method include carpal tunnel release, finger reconstruction, and finger and thumb arthritis treatments.

Northwest Orthopedic Specialist Real Estate LLC purchased the Spokane Valley building in February 2021 for $11.6 million, according to records from the Spokane County Assessor’s Office.

Renovation work began in early 2022. In July of this year, the Physical and Hand Therapy Clinic and the Express Walk-in Clinic opened, and the MRI room opened the following month.

The surgery center was the last project and took the longest because the Washington State Department of Health had to approve the construction plans and the construction site had to be approved by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. Bruininks
says. Spokane-based NAC Architecture designed the space. Spokane-based Silvey Construction Inc. was the contractor for the project, according to permit documents filed with the City of Spokane Valley.

NWOS is an independent practice group that dates back to the 1950s. It has three locations in the Spokane area, including its original outpatient surgery center in downtown Spokane. NWOS has 22 physician owners and approximately 300 employees.
