The college football season really gets going this week when the Illini kick off under the lights against Eastern Illinois in Champaign on Thursday.

On Saturday night, Notre Dame will face Texas A&M in a top-20 matchup.

And Northwestern will host MAC powerhouse Miami from Ohio the previous Saturday.

The Wildcats’ temporary lakefront stadium is generating a lot of interest, as is the question of who Northwestern’s starting quarterback will be when they take the field next weekend.

In the competition for the quarterback spot between graduate transfer Mike Wright and redshirt sophomore Jack Lausch, no clear number one starter has yet emerged.

It sounded like Northwestern head coach David Braun was keeping the Redhawks guessing as to who they would face on Saturday.

“To be completely honest, we would never discuss this internally if the decision was clear at the start of training camp,” Braun said. “From a defensive coordinator’s perspective, it comes down to Miami studying both Jack and Mike very thoroughly. They may have similar skill sets, but as a coordinator, you only have so much time in a day. As a defensive coordinator, if I know who the starting coordinator is going to be, I can do additional study and that information doesn’t necessarily have to be communicated to Miami until game day.”
