Now anyone with a Substack account can publish content

Anyone with a Substack account can now publish posts to Substack’s web and mobile apps, the company announced Thursday, making the newsletter platform even more of a social network. (Currently, users who publish to their profile from mobile can only do so through the Substack iOS app, but Android support is coming soon.)

Substack members can publish content, gain paid and free subscribers, and collect pledges from their Substack profile without having to create a publication. However, creating a publication allows them to take advantage of advanced features like a website, multiple admins, and sections. If they decide to start a new publication, they can import any subscribers they may have accumulated, according to Substack.

Substack is increasingly transforming the publishing platform into a social network

However, users cannot make their Substack profiles private so that anyone can follow and read posts. If they want to post to a limited audience, they must create a private post on their profile and link to it.

In addition to these updates, Substack also announced that it continues to work on making the platform more mobile-friendly. Last month, the platform began allowing users to publish full posts from the mobile app. Today, the company announced that it is also testing live video and in-app payments.
