Obituary for Wayne A. Brown

Wayne A. Brown, 64, of Vine Grove, passed away Tuesday, August 20, at Robley Rex VA Hospital. Wayne was born March 31, 1960, in Madison, Wisconsin, to Donald and Rose (Anthon) Brown.

Wayne has lived in Vine Grove since 2010 when he moved here to work at Fort Knox as an instructional systems specialist for the 83rd ARRTC in the Directorate of Training Development.

Wayne graduated from Oregon High School in Oregon, Wisconsin in 1980. He joined the Air Force in December 1981. He served for 21 years and retired in February 2003. He most recently served with the 621st Air Mobility Operations Group at McGuire AFB, New Jersey, from where he deployed to the Middle East after 9/11, eventually serving in Kandahar, Afghanistan.

While on active duty, Wayne earned his bachelor’s degree in career education and development from Southern Illinois University, graduating in August 2003. After leaving the Air Force, he worked for ABC Building Supply in upstate New York for 1 ½ years. From there, he received a federal job offer to work for the Army Reserve at Fort McCoy, Wisconsin in 2005, and eventually moved with the unit to Fort Knox in 2010 to continue his career in training development.

Wayne met his wife of 34 years, Stephanie (Riebe), in July 1989 in Madison, Wisconsin, when Wayne’s sister Sherri set them up at a hideout. Six months later, on February 2, 1990, they were married in Tampa, Florida, and headed to Torrejon AFB in Spain, Wayne’s next assignment.

Wayne was an avid football fan. He loved his team, the Green Bay Packers, so much that he bought a share in them in 1995. He couldn’t wait for football season to start so he could play fantasy football.

Wayne enjoyed working out at the gym, sometimes twice a day. Throughout his life, he enjoyed many sports: golf, softball, tennis, racquetball, and biking. His current favorite was pickleball. He looked forward to summers in Wisconsin, where he could go boating, tubing, and playing cards and water volleyball with his family. Nothing made him happier than coming home from work, relaxing in his backyard pool, and listening to podcasts. Wayne also enjoyed traveling with his wife, Stephanie, seeing new places and learning new things wherever he went.

Wayne loved his church, Lifeline Assembly of God, and his church family. He volunteered on construction projects, mowed lawns, and enjoyed playing on the church dartball team.

Wayne is survived by his wife Stephanie, his father Donald Brown, his sister Sherri Peterson and his brother Donnie Brown. He was predeceased by his mother Rose and brother-in-law Jeffrey Peterson.
