“Obviously biased” Cameron Smith admits Ripper GC’s secret trump card that other LIV teams lack

“These guys are the life of any party, but when it comes to golf, they’re here to tee off and go, and they’re here to win.” This is the description of Ripper GC on the official LIV Golf website. The Australian team often enjoys spending time together on and off the course and is a good friend.

Just a few days ago, while practicing for the Greenbrier at the Old White, the entire team and their caddies were seen taking shots with Greg Norman. It was their caddie tournament and it was an absolute joy to watch them. Whether it was Marc Leishman’s caddie hitting an impressive shot or Cameron Smith’s caddie hitting a disappointing shank, not a single moment was dull. According to Captain Smith, it’s things like this that set the team apart.

After a successful round at the LIV Golf Greenbrier on Saturday, Team Ripper GC is in the lead with a total score of 36 under par. They are one stroke ahead of Smash GC. At the post-round press conference, the team was asked if the fun of the caddie competition helped them bond better. Smith replied: “I think I’m biased. I hang out with the guys a lot.”

He says his team – consisting of Lucas Herbert, Marc Leishman and Matt Jones, as well as the caddies and a couple of physiotherapists – enjoy a few beers and dinner every night. This camaraderie, he believes, strengthens the team dynamic. “In my opinion, this not only promotes team spirit, but also something else – it’s like playing for something other than yourself, instead of just playing for yourself,” Cameron Smith also pointed out that the other LIV Golf teams do not have the same level of warmth and unity.

He says the best part about being captain of the Ripper GC team is that they support each other no matter what. This was evident when Smith answered a question about Sam Pinfold’s failure in the caddie tournament. He defended Pinfold by saying that he played extremely well and only had one unlucky shot. Unfortunately, that was the shot that the camera caught at the end. Cameron Smith and Sam Pinfold also did a fun little role play at the competition, with Smith being the caddie and Pinfold being the golfer.

“No, we had a lot of fun at this caddy tournament. I think we should do it more often. It was cool,” he concluded. Ripper GC also has fun traditions for the caddie competition, making the time spent together on the golf course even more memorable!

While the Ripper GC shared every moment on the official Instagram account, they also shared clips from the caddie competition that took place on August 15, one day before the Greenbrier was scheduled to begin. In the video, Cameron Smith can be seen taking a can of beer from a packed crate in the cart. He opens a can each for Pinfold, Matt Kelly and the other caddies.

Well, there is a peculiarity in the way they drink. As an initiation, they open the can, make a hole in the body and drink from it before continuing. They even titled it: “Starting the Caddy Comp in true Ripper style 🍺🤣“. What do you think of the camaraderie on the Smith-led team? Let us know in the comments section below!
