Ohio COVID-19 cases rise for 10th consecutive week: Coronavirus update for Thursday, August 8

CLEVELAND, Ohio – For the tenth consecutive week, the number of new COVID-19 cases in Ohio has worsened, rising to 6,660 from 5,962 last week this week, the state reported Thursday.

In the spring, the number of cases steadily declined, but since the beginning of June there has been an upswing again.

Thursday’s report recorded the highest number of new cases since mid-February and the total was more than double the same time last year.

At least 1,382,824 Ohio residents have received the updated one-dose COVID-19 vaccine, an increase of 1,163 people from the previous week, the state reported. That represents 11.8% of the state’s population.

The total number of COVID-19 cases in Ohio since the beginning of 2020 has reached 3,781,375.

Last week, 192 Ohioans were newly hospitalized, bringing the total since the pandemic began in 2020 to 152,576. Six people were admitted to intensive care, bringing the total since 2020 to 15,836.

The state health department reported 11 more deaths from COVID-19, bringing the total to 44,073. Reporting of deaths is sometimes delayed by weeks.
