Ohio Governor Mike DeWine has tested positive for COVID-19. Ohio is battling a surge in cases this summer.

DeWine, 77, took a COVID test early Tuesday after experiencing mild symptoms such as sneezing and a runny nose that worsened overnight. He is working from home this week and taking the antiviral drug Paxlovid prescribed by his doctor, according to the governor’s office.

This is at least the third time DeWine has contracted COVID-19 since the disease emerged in 2020.

Ohio reported 7,347 cases of COVID-19 last week, a 23% increase since late July, according to the state Department of Health. DeWine’s office said the number of cases and sewage discoveries has been increasing since late June. The average number of hospitalizations over the past three weeks was 190.

The omicron variant KP.3.1.1 is responsible for most COVID cases in the U.S. The Food and Drug Administration is expected to soon approve new mRNA vaccines targeting newer strains of the virus, the Washington Post reported.
